Khadija Yakubu, a 22-year-old woman, was detained by the Yobe State Police Command for reportedly poisoning her stepchildren, killing three of them.
On Friday, September 17, the event occurred in the Makara-Huta region of the Potiskum local government area of Yobe State.
The stepmother is accused of giving the children poisoned tea, which caused them to become ill.
The event was verified in a press statement signed and released by ASP Dungus Abdulkarim, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Yobe State Command.
The youngsters were brought to a hospital after drinking the tea made by the suspect in the early hours of Friday, September 17, 2021, at 0900 hours, according to the statement, however, three of the victims died while getting treatment and one remained unconscious.
Dungus explained, “so far an investigation has been launched by the police to unfold the elements of the case for subsequent prosecution.”
Zainab Alhaji Haruna, seven years old, Ahmed Alhaji Haruna, nine years old, Umar Alhaji Haruna, twelve years old, and Maryam Alhaji Haruna, eleven years old, were the casualties.
“The suspect has been apprehended and is in custody. An investigation has begun to ascertain the remote and immediate cause of the incident. She will be charged after investigation,” Dungus stated.
