IGP, ICP Must Produce Two SARS Officers, Panel Orders

The Independent Investigative Panel on allegations of human rights violations by the defunct Special Anti- Robbery Squad and some other departments of the Nigerian Police has ordered the Inspector General of Police and the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State to release the two policemen quoted in a case of illegal arrest and confinement.

According to PUNCH reports, the 11- person panel, head by Justice Suleiman Galadima (retd. ) made the call because the two victims– Mr Obiazo and Mr Uzo Emeana both belonging to the SARS Awkuzu unit, Anambra State declined on three successive circumstances to be present before the panel as respondents in the case by John Alozie, who alleged them of arbitrarily arrest and jailed.

A statement conveyed by the Deputy Director, Public Affairs of the National Human Rights Commission, Fatimah Agwai Mohammed, noted Justice Galadima as telling that, in light of the respondents’ refusal to happen, the panel is left with no other option than to force their manifestation.

According to him, the panel would not permit the activities of some illicit police cops to deter the course of justice in the nation. Recall that the maltreatment of Nigerian youths instigated the #EndSars protest which caused chaos in the country last year, 2020.

” The panel is left with no choice but to order the arrest of Mr Obiazo and Mr Uzo Emeana, both of SARS Awkuzu, Anambra state over alleged arbitrary arrest and detention of one Mr John Emeka Alozie” .

According to the panel Chairman, both the two police officers are essential for the panel to unfold and decipher what occurred between the police and the victim, John Emeka who was claimed to have been illegally detained by the police officers fora very long time without any step of being taken to court.

The panel’ s secretariat was directed to assure that an enrolled copy of injunctions is attended to, on the respondents.
