The Katsina State Police Command detained 22-year-old Buhari Haruna, a physically challenged man, on suspicion of abduction for ransom.
In Kankia village, he was arrested and sent to the state police command on Monday, September 20 for planning and carrying out a kidnapping attempt on Hamisu Salisu.
On August 20, the suspect, who claimed to be a phone repairer, allegedly contacted his primary target and demanded N2 million in order to spare his life and the lives of his family from being killed or abducted.
A police source said that after the suspect made the threat, SP Isah Gambo claimed he intended to kidnap the victim’s father but abandoned the plot when he learned of his elderly victim’s condition and went to the hospital instead.
Hamisu, who reported the incident to the police, was urged to cooperate with the suspect who told him to deposit the N2 million ransom at a certain spot in order to rescue his family from kidnapping.
Without his knowledge, the police had set up a perimeter and were patiently waiting for him to come to pick up the ransom. As soon as he did, the police swooped down and captured him.
Buhari admitted to the crime when being interrogated, despite his assertion that it was his first time.
