Ronaldo ‘will suffer’ if Portugal face Italy in World Cup play-off – Bonucci

With a place in Qatar on the line, the centre-back would relish the opportunity to face his former Juventus teammate.

Cristiano Ronaldo would “suffer” if Portugal plays Italy in the World Cup play-off, according to former Juventus teammate Leonardo Bonucci.
In order to set up a high-profile encounter against Ronaldo, the center-back first needs the Azzurri to defeat North Macedonia and Portugal to defeat Turkey.

At least one of Italy’s and Portugal’s teams will be unable to compete in the World Cup in Qatar in 2022.

“I [spoke with] Cristiano Ronaldo and we joked about the possible Portugal vs Italy match, we’ll see what happens on the pitch, Cristiano knows he will suffer some blows,” Bonucci told RAI Sport.

“We have to concentrate on what we will do on the pitch, then in March we will meet again and I am convinced that we will play two great matches.”

Face-Off : Italy Vs Portugal

Both Italy and Portugal are sad to be in this situation, as they had hoped for more than being forced to compete in a play-off.

The Azzurri, in particular, are a surprising selection, having won Euro 2020 and seemed to be on the rise under Roberto Mancini.

While it may be foolish to imply that Italy and Portugal will face off, the two countries will be pitted against North Macedonia and Turkey, respectively.
