US Vice President Kamala Harris to be acting president as Joe Biden undergoes a medical procedure

The White House has announced that US Vice President Kamala Harris would serve as acting president while President Joe Biden is undergoing regular colonoscopy surgery.

“As was the case when President George W Bush had the same procedure in 2002 and 2007, and following the process set out in the Constitution, President Biden will transfer power to the Vice President for the brief period of time when he is under anaesthesia,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement.

“The Vice President will work from her office in the West Wing during this time.”
On Friday, Mr Biden went to the Walter Reed Medical Center for his yearly exam, his first as president.

Ms Psaki also stated that a report on Mr Biden’s health will be released by the White House later on Friday. The medical examination was not initially scheduled on the public presidential calendar, but it was disclosed just hours before Vice President Biden departed the White House at roughly 8.30 a.m.

At 8.51 a.m., he arrived at the hospital in Maryland.
Mr. Biden, who turns 79 on Saturday, is the oldest person to ever occupy the presidency in the United States.
