“In a most audacious move, a nursing mother, 35-year-old Mariam Drissu was arrested at the Edo state Command headquarters of the Agency on Thursday 21st October while trying to smuggle drugs into the cell for a suspect in custody. Officers on duty had while searching the food brought by Mariam for her relation in custody discovered two cups of “Loud” cannabis weighing 13grams buried inside the food (akpu) meant for the suspect in custody.” the statement read.

On the 6th and 15th of October, two consignments of heroin measuring 4.40kg and 550grams were captured at the MMIA’s Ikeja cargo facility.
The first was detected within bags of granulated sugar and flour being transported from Johannesburg, South Africa, to Lagos on an Ethiopian Airlines aircraft when it was discovered at the airport’s SAHCO import shed.

Two suspects were detained for further investigation: Chukwuemeka Ugochukwu, a freight agent who approved the shipment, and Kabiru Aminu, a stock keeper who was to collect the package for further distribution to beneficiaries. On the 9th of October, Adeoya Segun Joy, who was supposed to receive the suitcase from Kabiru Aminu, was apprehended in Ajao estate, while Enahoro Emmanuel Anointing, who was also supposed to collect the shipment, was apprehended in Lagos’ Abuleegba neighbourhood. Both were following orders from their South African allies.

The second shipment, discovered in walls of ten containers laced with tailoring materials at the SAHCO export yard, was destined for Malaysia through Addis Ababa on Ethiopian cargo aircraft, while a freight forwarding agent, Ekpe Samson Victor, was detained in connection with the unlawful export.
NDLEA officers prevented an attempt by another freight agency, Igwe Okoye Onwukwe, to export two consignments of cannabis to the United Kingdom. On October 15, Igwe Okoye Onwukwe submitted a box containing 16.55kg cannabis for export to the United Kingdom at the NAHCO export shed, where he was quickly detained.

Surprisingly, Onwukwe was located as the owner of another cargo of 15.85kg cannabis bound for the UK that was confiscated on the 20th of October, despite the fact that he was still being investigated in detention.
